THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING

Street carts and, more recently, a crop of food trucks and trailers are staples of New York City's diverse culinary world. But Dessert Truck, a sweets-on-wheels business that rolled onto the scene in October of 2007, managed to turn heads of New Yorkers habituated to a myriad mobile food scene. The hook? Co-owners Jerome Chang and Chris Chen's pledge to "bring desserts from the world of fine dining to the realm of everyday enjoyment." Chang and Chen deliver on their promise and the proof is in the pudding—or in this case, the decadent chocolate bread pudding adventurously paired with bacon crème anglaise.

Dessert Truck offers one sumptuous dessert after another, each updated avatars of perennial classics (think molten chocolate cake with a hint of olive oil, garnished with sea salt and roasted pistachios or gianduja pot de crème with hazelnut brittle) executed from a humble truck planted near the campus of New York University.

New Yorkers were quickly smitten with the four-star desserts served from this four-wheel venue and with good reason. Whereas high caliber desserts with quality ingredients may come with a hefty price elsewhere, each gourmet item on Dessert Truck's menu is five dollars; and for an extra dollar, dessert fiends can add a scoop of freshly spun vanilla ice cream to accompany any dish. The wow factor doesn't rest on low prices alone. As a graduate of The French Culinary Institute and former pastry sous chef of Le Cirque, Chang knows a thing or two about creating exceptional desserts. Partner Chen, who is pursuing an MBA from Columbia Business School, brings his business prowess to the table, making this duo unbeatable and this truck unstoppable.

Now if only they made home deliveries!
